Narcissists often resort to word salad as a means of gaslighting. They may use it even in conversations that seem trivial, as a way to manipulate and assert control. The ultimate goal is to evade responsibility for their actions while keeping you in a state of confusion.
By using word salad, narcissists can distort your understanding of events. They may shift the blame onto you, claiming you misunderstood or misremembered the conversation. Over time, this can lead you to doubt your own perceptions, making you more dependent on them for interpretation. This dependency is exactly what a narcissist desires—they want complete control over their victims.
Additionally, engaging in word salad provides narcissists with a significant amount of narcissistic supply. They view conversations as competitions and are not concerned with honesty or logic; their primary goal is to win. If they can confuse or frustrate you, they see it as a victory.
