Despite feeling inadequate internally, narcissists convince themselves they are superior to others. This is often demonstrated through insults, slander, mockery, and false claims of accomplishment.
Narcissists tend to idealize powerful individuals while holding contempt for those they perceive as weak or inferior. Their cruelty may stem from envy of your uniqueness or value.

Narcissists are hypersensitive to criticism, seeing it as a grave threat. Whether constructive or not, they react defensively, often escalating conflicts. If their attempts to force you to validate them fail, they may retaliate, becoming your adversary. - Narcissists Struggle to Forgive Themselves
Contrary to popular belief, narcissists’ behavior is often rooted in self-hatred rather than self-love. They struggle with forgiving themselves and may bury insecurities or dismiss them as unimportant. Their egos prevent them from prioritizing forgiveness or compassion. - Narcissists Live in a Fantasy World
Narcissists often construct flattering, fictional self-images that can be alluring. Their stories of triumph and heroism may captivate others, especially those with low self-esteem. However, these fantasies are a defense against their inner emptiness.
