Narcissists thrive on chaos. They might refuse to attend a wedding, only to show up at the last moment after being begged repeatedly.
For example, my father would pull this stunt frequently. He would ignore invitations, refuse calls, and make everyone plead with him to attend. Once there, he’d act as though the entire event was about him, overshadowing the bride and groom.
This manipulation is deliberate. Narcissists understand the power of withholding attention and weaponize it to make themselves the center of everything.
Behavior 3: Controlling the Event
If a narcissist isn’t given full control over wedding arrangements, they’ll make you regret it.
They might demand to oversee every detail, from the guest list to the outfits, and if you resist, they could walk out in the middle of the event, leaving chaos in their wake. For them, it’s not about ensuring a smooth event—it’s about control and feeding their ego.
Behavior 4: Sabotaging as a “Helper”
Some narcissists offer to help, but their true intention is to ruin the event.
For instance, a narcissistic bridesmaid might pretend to be supportive but subtly undermine the bride. She might give bad advice, criticize decisions, or make cutting remarks to lower the bride’s confidence—all while maintaining an innocent facade.
Why? Jealousy. They can’t stand the idea of someone else being in the spotlight.
