It’s mean, cruel, crazy-making, and incredibly harmful, often leaving victims feeling as though they are losing their minds.
Today, we’re talking about reactive abuse. Let’s start by defining what reactive abuse is and what it entails. Reactive abuse refers to the victim’s adverse or aggressive reaction to the abuse they are experiencing from their abuser. In simple terms, it occurs when the victim reacts to ongoing abuse. Narcissistic abusers then twist the situation, claiming that the victim is actually the abuser because of the reaction they displayed.
Now, back to reactive abuse. Essentially, this happens when a victim reacts to the abuse they’re being subjected to. Their reaction might include yelling, throwing objects, or hurling insults at the abuser. Narcissistic abusers rely on this tactic because it’s both easy to provoke and highly effective.
Here’s what typically happens: the victim of chronic and continuous abuse and gaslighting eventually snaps, displaying a natural human reaction to the abuse. At this moment, the abuser flips the script, gaslighting the victim about what actually happened, and accuses the victim of being the abuser. This manipulation can convince the victim they’re at fault for everything, even though their reaction is a normal response to extreme provocation.
