When a narcissist says, “I would never hurt you,” that is when they are the most dangerous. When a narcissist is sweet and speaking nice things, believe me, it is the calm before the storm. They are going to do something worse. So you should always believe the opposite of what they say. This is the trap most people do not see coming because it doesn’t look like danger, does it? It doesn’t feel like a trap. It looks like charm, sounds like safety, and feels like love. But when a narcissist suddenly becomes gentle, kind, and overly affectionate, it’s never pure; it’s not coming from a place of genuine peace. It’s coming from calculation.
They are softening you up before the blow, creating a false sense of emotional security so that when they strike you, you’re stunned. They create a false sense of emotional security, so that when they strike, you are too stunned to move, too shocked to speak, too confused to trust your intuition. “I would never hurt you” isn’t a promise; it’s a distraction from the enemy. It is something they say right before they cross a line they cannot uncross.
And when they do, they will point back to those exact words to make you doubt your pain. They will say, “How could you think that after everything I’ve said to you?” And you will freeze because you remember the tone, the warmth, the eyes that looked so sincere, so puppy-like. But sincerity means nothing when it is used as a weapon.
